Autumn Calabrase’ food philosophy is a refreshing change from so many of the healthy eating cookbooks currently doing the rounds. While strict diets and tough-as-nails workout routines can help you get fabulously fit, they are not always sustainable and are seldom much fun. Calabrase, however, believes the four ingredients for health and fitness are:

- Know how much of it to eat
This is reflected in the breadth and depth of the meals you’ll find in this cookbook. Each one is tasty AND healthy and there are even some fantastic desserts and cocktails for when you want a treat. Each recipe contains step-by-step instructions that are clear and easy to understand – even if you aren’t much of a chef and, addition, nutritional Information including calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, carbs, fiber, sugar, and protein are all listed so that you can make informed decisions as to what you should eat and when. There are simple recipes with just a couple of ingredients right through to more involving and complex recipes for when you have time to spare on more impressive meals.
For those who aren’t big fans of weighing and measuring, the recipes also include Autumn Calabrase’ unique “container system” which is a simple way to regulate portion size without having to resort to using the kitchen scales.
Every recipe is clearly labeled according to the diet to which it is suitable. There are vegan, vegetarian, paleo-friendly, and gluten-free recipes which makes it one of the most inclusive cookbooks around. At the end of the book, the dietary index lists recipes by diet which makes finding the right recipe very easy indeed. Where a recipe can by modified to make it fit a different dietary approach, a tip is listed so that, for example, a meal containing wheat can be made gluten-free.
The book itself is spiral bound which is an inspired design consideration for a cook book. No more having to go back and find the page of the recipe you are making because the book won’t stay open – the book lies flat so you won’t end up ruining it by having to page through it with ingredient-covered fingers.
